Shaping the wellbeing of  Queensland children, families and communities

A community-led approach uniting families, experts and local champions

About the Initiative

Collaborating for healthier Queensland families and communities

The Queensland Social Prescribing Trial is a groundbreaking initiative led by the Australian Social Prescribing Institute of Research & Education (ASPIRE). We’re working in partnership with Neighbourhood Centres, local communities, government agencies, and national and international experts to deliver and evaluate social prescribing across Queensland. This two-year trial involves ten diverse communities, each shaping their own tailored solutions to improve health, reduce loneliness, and create lasting social connections. Our goal is a statewide approach with deep local impact, ensuring communities lead the way towards improved wellbeing for children, families, and all Queenslanders.

Putting Queensland Kids First

Our initiative supports the Queensland Government’s broader vision—Putting Queensland Kids First—which prioritises prevention and early intervention for children at critical milestones. Social prescribing aligns perfectly with this strategy, providing a proactive, community-based response to growing concerns about social isolation and loneliness among children and families. By intervening early, we’re setting the foundation for stronger community connections, improved mental health, and long-term benefits that extend across generations.

A statewide trial tailored to local needs

This two-year trial (2024–2026) spans ten carefully selected Neighbourhood Centres across Queensland, including locations such as Deception Bay, Wilsonton, Nambour, Yeppoon, and Mareeba. Each site is supported by dedicated Link Workers who identify local strengths and co-design customised social prescribing activities and community connections. With $5.4 million funding from the Queensland Government, this trial is designed to rigorously evaluate the impact of social prescribing and establish a scalable, sustainable model for wider implementation.

Our Vision for Impact

Our vision is ambitious yet achievable: to significantly reduce loneliness and social isolation across Queensland communities. By embedding social prescribing into local Neighbourhood Centres, we empower individuals and families to access meaningful local services, activities, and networks. Success means healthier, more engaged communities, reduced strain on healthcare services, and empowered Queenslanders equipped with the social connections and resources they need to thrive now and into the future.
